Ziqitza - Impact of failed New Year’s Resolution on mental health and how to set realistic goals

New Year’s resolutions are often like those promises that are meant to be broken. Only a small percentage of people follow through on the resolutions they make at the start of the new year. Not being able to achieve the goals you set for yourself can be scary, and it may have a greater mental impact than you realize.

The word ‘New’ in the fresh year places a lot of emphasis on starting over and turning over a new leaf. But keep in mind that you cannot suddenly transform into a different person when the clock strikes twelve. Change is a difficult process – emphasis on the words ‘difficult’ and ‘process.’ To make matters worse, if you are already suffering from depression or another type of mental stress or illness, failing to keep the previous year’s resolutions might lead to even more self-harm. Rather than setting resolutions that may cause you tension, anxiety, or additional suffering, start the new year by creating resolutions that will encourage self-care.

Ziqitza helps you get a fresh start on New Year’s Day, here are a few pointers for making realistic New Year’s resolutions so you don’t have to deal with letdown next year.

Make a plan to reach that goal

Make a detailed plan for achieving your goal(s) once you’ve decided on them. Having a strategy and a path to follow can help you see your progress and keep you from being impatient for immediate results. Depending on your goals, you’ll be able to see how far you’ve come in three months, five months, seven months, or even every day.

Avoid Repeating Past Failures

Another way to keep your New Year’s resolve is to avoid making the same resolution year after year. “If people believe they can achieve it, they probably can, but if they’ve already tried and failed, their self-belief will be low.” If you decide to pursue the same ambitions you’ve previously pursued, spend some time assessing your previous results. Which techniques were the most successful? Which of them was the least effective? What has kept you from keeping your resolution in previous years?

Consider making a minor change to your resolution to make it more feasible. You will be more likely to achieve actual results this year if you change your approach.

Make a list of prizes to keep yourself motivated.

Setting little rewards, such as “going to a relaxing spa” after completing two months of the goal, may help urge you to continue. You don’t have to limit yourself to a large prize for achieving the goal since if you don’t achieve it due to unforeseen situations, it might lead to a lot of self-doubt and misery. We also have a propensity to underestimate the worth of benefits that require a lengthy wait. This is known as delay discounting. The more you wait, the less precious your treasure gets. Set small rewards for yourself to avoid this, and you will remain motivated throughout.

Start With Small Steps

Taking on too much too quickly is a major cause of New Year’s resolve failure. Starting an unsustainable restricted diet, going overboard at the gym, or drastically changing your typical behaviour are all guaranteed ways to sabotage your ambitions. Instead, concentrate on taking small efforts that will eventually help you achieve your greater goal.

While it may appear to be a slow start, these modest incremental improvements help you cling to your new healthy habits and increase your chances of long-term success.

Create your own social tribe.

In today’s social media climate, it is simple to find a community of like-minded people that are interested in sharing your goal. Make a similar social network for yourself. However, just as having a social tribe has advantages, it also has disadvantages: pressure. Don’t get too caught up in what other people are doing on social media. Remember, you’re here for support, not to compare yourself to others.

Accept and forgive yourself if you fail.

Despite your greatest efforts, it is possible that you will fail or make a mistake. Accept and forgive yourself for your shortcomings. Rather than being hard on yourself, learn from your failures and continue to your resolution until you reach your goal, rather than abandoning it at the end of the year.
