  1. What inspired you to write for a younger audience, and how do you approach crafting a story that resonates with children?

I want to influence the younger generation. I have a younger sister, and I want her to grow up knowing she can be anything she wants.

  1. Children’s books often carry important messages. Can you tell us about the themes or values you aimed to convey in your latest book?

I want to increase representation of women, specifically women of colour, in STEM fields. I wanted to do it in a simple and unassuming children’ s book so from a young age these ideas are not uncommon.

  1. Illustrations play a crucial role in children’s books. How did the collaboration with the illustrator enhance the storytelling, and what was the creative process like?

It was complicated in the way that we are both creative people and had somewhat different visions. However, collaborating was a new and overall enjoyable experience.

  1. Connecting with young readers is essential. How do you strike a balance between entertaining and educating in your children’s books?

I want the book to, at the forefront, be entertaining. I’m relying more on a form of subliminal messaging. I don’t want this book to be about learning, more about enjoyment that imbues lessons and values in the children.

  1. Your characters are charming and relatable. How do you create characters that children can identify with, and do they draw from your own childhood experiences?

I am a middle sister- I have both a younger and older sister- so some of the characters of Amara could be semi autobiographical. Overall, it is a somewhat common experience: doing a project in school. It was meant to be relatable and therefore more meaningful.

  1. In the digital age, children have various forms of entertainment. How do you see the role of children’s books in fostering a love for reading and storytelling?

In my experience, bedtime books and children’s books changed my life. Although I definitely utilise online resources, I firmly believe that physical books are impactful- at any age- but especially at a young one.

  1. The language and writing style in children’s books are distinct. How do you tailor your writing to engage young readers while maintaining a level of sophistication that can grow with them?

I’m very entertained and captivated by rhymes, even now. That was something I was very keen on for a children’s book.

  1. Family and educators often play a role in introducing children to books. How do you envision your books being used in educational settings or as part of family reading routines?

Seeing the books in schools, homes, libraries. All of them are ideal situations. I hope children enjoy reading it, and a byproduct happens to be they feel more capable to do what they dream, not what they are told.
