HCG Cancer Hospital Ranchi successfully treats 55-year-old Male suffering from a rare breast cancer

Ranchi (Jharkhand) [India], 18 August 2022: Doctors at HCG Abdur Razzaque Ansari Cancer Hospital, Ranchi successfully diagnosed and treated a rare case of male breast cancer. The patient, Prahlad Mehto, aged 55 years was in great health until he first noticed a lump near his chest almost a year ago. Over the next couple of months, the size of the lump grew significantly and eventually turned into a painful ulcer. Upon visiting HCG Cancer Hospital, and conducting tests and scans, a bone metastasis was found and through a biopsy, the cancer was detected and successfully treated by team of doctors including Dr. T. M Singh, Senior Consultant – Radiation Oncology, and Dr. Prakash Bhagat, Consultant, Surgical Oncology.

Bone metastasis occurs when a cancer cell spreads from its original site to a bone. This happens often, in the case of undiagnosed prostate or breast cancer. In the case of Prahlad, the metastasis was detected in July 2021 and was initially treated with 8 cycles of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy (NACT). The bone metastasis was eliminated through radiation therapy, followed by a left modified radical mastectomy was conducted.

The procedure which is the primary method of treating male breast cancer involved the removal of most of the axillary and pectoral lymph nodes of the breast, the axillary fat, and the investing fascia over the chest wall muscles. The patient was successfully treated.

Commenting on the importance of male breast cancer awareness, Dr.Prakash Bhagat, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, HCG Abdur Razzaque Ansari Cancer Hospital, Ranchi said, “Male breast tissue is suppressed and much lesser when compared to female breast tissue. In case of cancer in these remnant male breast tissues, the spread to the surrounding skin and chest area is much faster and hence can cause a serious threat and complication to the case. Therefore, it is essential for both men and women to undergo regular examinations for breast cancer screening since it offers the best chances for early detection of cancer and best treatment outcomes.”

Dr. T. M Singh, Senior Consultant – Radiation Oncology, HCG Abdur Razzaque Ansari Cancer Hospital, Ranchi said “Male breast cancer is a much rarer condition compared to female breast cancer, but it is still important to be aware of the condition since it might affect anybody, regardless of gender and we are working towards raising awareness towards it. Regular check ups for lumps in the chest area and underarm area can help with self-diagnosis and if any such lumps are found, we advise getting it checked by a medical professional immediately”.

Expressing his gratitude, the patient Prahlad Mehto, said, “If we were more aware of this condition and its prevalence in men. I notice, now, that not a lot of people know that even men can have breast cancer. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the doctors at HCG Cancer centre Ranchi for diagnosing the cancer before it could get worse and helping me undergo the surgery with minimal discomfort”.

With just 10–15 days of recovery time, the patient is in good health and back to normal.
