A Life of Leadership and Legacy: Maj Gen Balraj Mehta, Sena Medal, Steps into Coaching and Mentorship

New Delhi, India, 6th May, 2025: A career defined by courage, clarity, and compassion is now charting a new course. Maj Gen Balraj Mehta, Sena Medal, veteran of the Indian Army and corporate leader, is turning the page to begin a new chapter as a mentor, speaker, and author dedicated to helping individuals and organizations unlock their full potential.

Born in 1960, General Mehta’s life reflects a deep-rooted commitment to service and integrity. His family, displaced during the Partition of 1947, rebuilt their lives from scratch in independent India. That legacy of perseverance left a lasting mark on him. With no inherited privileges or safety nets, General Mehta rose through the ranks of the Army, beginning as a young 2nd Lieutenant in a Para Commando unit. Among his early missions was the daunting task of locating and retrieving the remains from a tragic helicopter crash in Himachal Pradesh involving Maj Gen Bhandari and two pilots—an operation that demanded not only physical endurance but emotional strength.

General Mehta found his true calling when he was posted as an Instructor at the Officers’ Academy in Madras (now Chennai). It was here that he discovered a deep passion for teaching, coaching, and mentoring—a passion that only grew stronger during his tenures at senior leadership levels. He relished guiding young soldiers and officers alike, shaping their potential into performance. Over the years, he amassed vast operational, administrative, logistic, instructional, financial, and man-management experience, which he consistently put to good use in the discharge of his wide-ranging duties and responsibilities

Over the next three decades, Maj Gen Mehta’s service was marked by excellence. He received ten honors for gallantry and distinguished service, including the prestigious Sena Medal. A double post-graduate and MPhil, he is also an alumnus of the prestigious Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. His intellectual rigor was further recognized during the Higher Air Command Course, where his dissertation on international terrorism and its implications for India earned him the Best Student award.

Maj Gen Mehta believes that leaders are not born but can be trained and groomed after proper selection and by sincerely cultivating the various leadership traits. His core values are empathy and respect for human beings in whichever station of life.

After retirement from the military, General Mehta seamlessly transitioned into high-level corporate leadership roles. But his passion for human development and ethical leadership soon led him down a more personal path: authorship and life coaching.

Today, Maj Gen Mehta is the author of three books: From Roots To Wings, a guide to grounded parenting; Parenting Beyond Yelling, which focuses on empathetic child-rearing; and Commanding Excellence, a leadership manual for modern professionals. These works are already resonating with a diverse audience—from corporate leaders to young parents navigating the challenges of the 21st century.

Having delivered a compelling TED Talk on raising compassionate children using what he calls the “Three Rustic Rules,” General Mehta now aims to reach wider audiences through seminars, coaching sessions, and keynote addresses. His target demographic includes young professionals, startup founders, and families seeking clarity, resilience, and purpose.

Supported by a loving family—his wife of 40 years, Dr. Shalini Mehta, and two accomplished sons—Air India Commander Arjun Balraj Mehta and Delhi High Court Advocate Karan Balraj Mehta—Maj Gen Mehta’s next mission is one of transformation. His message is simple yet powerful: leadership is not a title, but a way of life. And with the right guidance, anyone can lead.
