In the heart of Kilimanoor, Trivandrum, Kerala, there exists a culinary gem known as “Vazhiyorakkada.” This traditional family restaurant has a remarkable history that showcases the vision and dedication of one man – Mr. Mahesh. Established more than two decades ago by Mr. Johnson D., Vazhiyorakkada started as a modest toddy shop before undergoing a remarkable transformation into one of Kerala’s most reputable traditional restaurants.

Mahesh’s journey with Vazhiyorakkada began when he took over as the manager. At a mere 23 years of age, he had a bold vision for the establishment. He saw the potential in transforming this humble toddy shop into a thriving restaurant that would not only serve delicious food but also maintain high standards of hygiene and customer service.

Under Mahesh’s leadership, Vazhiyorakkada underwent a complete makeover. The restaurant expanded from three huts to five, and from one family hall to two, accommodating up to 120 patrons comfortably. What sets Vazhiyorakkada apart is its commitment to hygiene, exemplified by its well-maintained separate toilets for men, women, other genders, and differently-abled individuals.

The menu at Vazhiyorakkada is a testament to Kerala’s rich culinary heritage. They offer an array of mouthwatering dishes, including country chicken curry, mutton recipes, duck roast, crab roast, squid roast, prawns, Kerala-style meals, appam, porotta, chappathi, egg roast, and a variety of vegetable curries. The restaurant is also known for its tea, coffee, and the traditional snack, ilayada.

One of the restaurant’s unique features is its commitment to freshness. Vazhiyorakkada maintains a separate farm on the premises for raising country chicken and ducks, ensuring that the ingredients used in their dishes are as fresh as possible. They take pride in using wood for cooking and coconut oil for food preparation, never reusing the oil (which is used for burning wood).

Under Mahesh’s guidance, Vazhiyorakkada has not only expanded its physical presence but also its team. The restaurant has grown from employing 12 individuals to now providing livelihoods for 80 dedicated employees.

One poignant story that reflects Mahesh’s compassion and dedication is that of an employee named Manoj, who tragically lost his life in a road accident. Recognizing Manoj’s unwavering dedication, Mahesh made a compassionate decision to continue paying his salary to support Manoj’s family. This gesture showcases Mahesh’s commitment to not only the success of his restaurant but also the well-being of his employees and their families.

Mahesh’s influence extends beyond the walls of Vazhiyorakkada. He is deeply involved in supporting differently-abled individuals, promoting their self-sustainability, and contributing to the local community’s development.

With a strong social media presence as a content creator, Mahesh has forged strong relationships with customers from all walks of life. His warm and welcoming demeanor, often characterized by his ever-present smile, has endeared him to patrons ranging from common individuals to Union ministers, state cabinet members, politicians, bureaucrats, film stars, and celebrities like Smriti Irani.

Now, Mahesh and his brother Manesh, an NRI based in Abu Dhabi, are poised to embark on a new culinary adventure by launching a food hub. This food hub will feature a three-star restaurant, catering to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians, a Muffin House, renowned bakeries, a banquet hall, an EV charging station, and an open café.

In the world of hospitality and culinary excellence, Mahesh’s journey stands as a shining example of vision, dedication, and compassion. His unwavering commitment to providing exceptional food, maintaining high standards of hygiene, supporting his employees, and giving back to the community has made Vazhiyorakkada a symbol of culinary excellence in Kerala.
