Let’s understand some information about amputations. Dr Pravin S Narkhede, Vascular& Endovascular Surgeon said each year, more than 10 lakh amputations are performed globally, which means someone loses a limb every 30 seconds. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the number of diabetes patients is expected to increase from 285 million today to 435 million in 2030. The primary causes of amputations are vascular diseases (54%) and accidents (45%). The increasing population and increasing number of diabetes patients, coupled with poor diet leading to vascular diseases, indicate a higher likelihood of increased amputations in the future.
Vascular and Endovascular Surgeons are specialists in diseases related to blood vessels. The body has two main types of blood vessels: arteries and veins. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to various parts of the body, while veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart.
Dr Ashutosh B Aher , Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon, said Diseases affecting these blood vessels include aneurysms and obstructions, which are often complex. Risk factors such as diabetes, smoking, accidents, and existing heart conditions can exacerbate these issues. Blood vessel obstructions can result from blood clots or high cholesterol levels, leading to complications like gangrene, ulcers, pain when walking short distances, difficulty standing for long periods, and numbness in the limbs.
The prevalence of vascular diseases is significantly higher than commonly understood. Lack of awareness and delays in seeking medical advice can lead to severe complications. Timely consultation with vascular specialists can prevent amputations and protect against severe outcomes. Treatments for vascular diseases include angioplasty, stenting, bypass surgeries, and hybrid interventions. Timely intervention by experts can help avoid amputations and improve overall health outcomes.
