What happens when the promise of “happily ever after” meets the complicated realities of marriage? In Happily Ever After Is a Myth, author Anusha explores the emotional complexities of relationships, examining the delicate balance between love, loyalty, loneliness, sacrifice, and personal identity.
Set against the backdrop of contemporary urban life, the novel follows Shraddha Sharma, whose seemingly stable marriage begins to unravel following a mysterious accident. As she navigates family responsibilities, emotional distance, and unexpected connections, Shraddha is compelled to confront difficult questions about love, commitment, and the life she once imagined for herself.
A writer from Ranchi who has been writing stories and poems since the age of fifteen, Anusha brings her interest in human emotions and everyday relationships to this thought-provoking novel. In this interview, she discusses the inspiration behind her book, her writing process, the realities of marriage, and her approach to contemporary storytelling.
- What inspired you to write this particular book, and how did the idea for the story come to you?
I have always been interested in exploring the subject of relationships and marriage. The inspiration came from observing how relationships have changed in the modern world. We grow up believing in the idea of happily ever after but sometimes real life is far more complicated. The idea came from exploring what happens when love, loyalty, trust, and loneliness collide. The story gradually took shape around one simple question: what happens when the idea of forever is questioned. Shraddha, the protagonist of my novel, became the lens to deep dive into the complexities of a marriage through a story layered with what patriarchy and loyalty means in today’s world.
- Can you share some insights into your writing process? Do you follow a specific routine or have any unique rituals that help you get into the creative flow?
I don’t always follow a strict routine. Sometimes, I write straight for a few hours and on some days, creativity does not follow no matter how hard I try. However, I believe that ideas can come unexpectedly. So, I always jot down any line or idea that comes to me. Later, when I am working on the story, I integrate those ideas. I prefer writing in a quiet space away from distractions. Once you begin with a concrete idea, the story naturally follows.
- The characters in your book are quite distinct and memorable. Are they based on real people, or did they evolve purely from your imagination?
The characters in Happily Ever After Is A Myth are purely fictional. However, they are inspired by human emotions, real-life observations, and the complexities of marriage and relationships. While the characters are fictional, their struggles, insecurities, and dilemmas are very real. So, when you are reading, you may relate to many ideas or occurrences in the story.
- Your book delves into [specific theme or issue]. What motivated you to explore this theme, and what messages or discussions do you hope readers will take away from your work?
My novel Happily Ever After Is A Myth is layered in the themes of loyalty, betrayal, loneliness, and expectations we attach to the idea of a perfect relationship. What motivated me to explore the theme of a complex marriage was a simple realization that marriage is never perfect, relationships are not as simple as right or wrong. They are shaped by emotions, circumstances, and choices we make.
Through the story, I tried breaking down certain stereotypes about women and reflected on how patriarchy looks like in the modern world. I hope readers relate to my work. The major takeaway would be that not all relationships follow the ending we envisaged. We all grew up believing in the idea of happily ever after portrayed by cinema (especially). In my opinion, the real story of love and commitment begins after marriage.
- The world-building in your novel is incredibly rich and immersive. How did you go about creating the setting, and did you draw inspiration from any real-world locations or historical events?
First of all, thanks a lot. Since Happily Ever After Is A Myth is a story of a contemporary couple and it bursts certain myths and prejudices about marriage. The idea was to create a relatable story with authentic, raw characters having their own experiences and baggage. The inspiration was mainly drawn from everyday surroundings, modern urban life, hospitals, homes, workplaces, and the small spaces where relationships unfold.
- As a writer, how do you balance the need for originality with the expectations of the genre? Were there any challenges in putting your unique spin on familiar elements?
I think originality comes from the way a writer looks at familiar emotions and experiences rather than from creating something completely unfamiliar. With Happily Ever After Is a Myth, I worked with themes that readers may recognize—love, marriage, trust, betrayal, loneliness, and the search for happiness, but I wanted to explore them from a more realistic and emotionally layered perspective.
One of the biggest challenges was presenting relationships without simply categorizing characters as right or wrong. Real people are complicated, and their choices are often influenced by emotions, circumstances, and personal conflicts. The title itself reflects the unique perspective I wanted to bring to the genre. Instead of presenting a conventional idea of a perfect ending, the novel asks readers to think about what “happily ever after” really means—and whether it has to look the way stories have traditionally taught us to imagine it.
- The pacing of the story is well-crafted, keeping readers engaged from start to finish. Can you share your approach to maintaining tension and momentum throughout the narrative?
I approached the pacing by making sure that every chapter contributes something meaningful to the characters or to the larger conflict. Rather than relying only on dramatic events, I tried to build tension through unanswered questions, emotional uncertainty, revelations, and the gradual uncovering of things the characters have kept hidden.
For me, the key was balancing quieter emotional moments with moments of revelation and conflict. I wanted readers to stay invested not just because they were wondering what would happen next, but because they genuinely wanted to understand why the characters made the choices they did.
- In the age of rapidly changing media and reader preferences, how do you see the role of traditional storytelling evolving, and how do you adapt your writing to connect with contemporary audiences?
I believe traditional storytelling will always remain relevant because, at its core, it is about human emotions, experiences, and connections—things that do not change even as the way we consume stories evolves. What has changed is the way readers discover and engage with those stories.
As a contemporary writer, I try to keep my storytelling emotionally authentic while making the narrative accessible to today’s readers. I focus on relatable characters, realistic situations, engaging pacing, and themes that reflect the complexities of modern life. At the same time, I don’t want to compromise the depth of the story simply to follow a trend.
I also see social media and digital platforms as an opportunity rather than a challenge. They allow writers to connect directly with readers, share ideas, and build conversations around their work. Ultimately, I believe the best way to connect with contemporary audiences is to tell an honest, meaningful story in a way that feels both familiar and fresh.
