Next on our list of India’s premier writing stars of 2024 is Momi Borah, an Electrical Engineer who lives in Guwahati, Assam located in the North Eastern region of India. She completed her Diploma in Engineeringfrom HRH the Prince Of Wales Institute ofEngineering & Technology (established in 1927). She also holds a Degree in Business Administrations from Sikkim Manipal University and is currently working as an Deputy Manager (Electrical) in Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL). She was born in a small agricultural village named Karolibari situated in Titabor, Upper Assam. Her father is a veterinarian and her mother a homemaker. Like most village children, Momi grew up listening to folk tales, historical and mythological stories from her grandmother. These magical tales and stories of her native land left a profound impact on her and drew her towards writing short stories.

From a young age, Momi Borah read a lot of books in her regional language Assamese by native writers. When she joined Engineering, herinterest towards reading books in the English language of writers all over the world grew. Besides reading books, watching movies and storytelling are her hobbies. Her state Assam is full of different tribes with colourful cultural diversities, ancient monuments and historical legends on the bank of mighty Brahmaputra River. Momi Borah’s debut novel ‘Mirage’ was published by BeejaHouse in March 2022 and formally launched on 08/04/2022 by Mrs. Malaya Goswami, 39th National Film Best Actress Awardee at Hotel Vivanta by Taj, Guwahati in the presence of well-known writer, filmmaker Er. Arnab Jan Deka. During the 90s, Assam faced a lot of insurgency and the news papers were full of scary news of encounters, bomb blast, rapes along with dead bodies of people. These incidents affected her deeply to the extent that she could not venture out of her house alone for a period of time. Luckily, her family always supported her and helped her to pen down her feelings in the form of stories.

Momi always felt that children are the most victimized during political such conflicts. She is of the opinionthat every child has a right to dream and it is the duty of the Government to provide an environment where they can turn their dreams into reality. Her debut novelMirage is inspired by such a story which shows how political conflicts and insurgency can have a profound impact on children.

She strongly believes that authors can instigate humanity in readers through writing and change the world by sharing the pain and grief that ordinary people go through in their lives. At present Momi Borah is writing short stories for international competitions. Her dream is to see a world where every child gets an opportunity to fulfill their dream and live a happy and contended life.
