Cricket is more than just a sport—it’s a saga of passion, resilience, brilliance, and legacy. Drawing from decades of dedicated research and a deep love for the gentleman’s game, Amin invites readers to explore cricket’s rich tapestry—from Don Bradman’s most talked-about zero to Vinoo Mankad’s overlooked genius. With 45 riveting chapters stitched together like a cricketing kaleidoscope, this book is a heartfelt tribute to the sport’s glorious past and an eye-opener for modern fans. If you thought you knew cricket, think again. This is where the untold stories shine the brightest.

1. What inspired you to write Sparkles On The Oval Ground, and how did the idea for the book come about?

The virtue and essence of cricket, its colorful characters, its ups and downs have hypnotized me since my childhood. It has tempted me to bring some of its jewels, their approach to the game, and their performances and achievements between the two covers of a book, as many of the present-day followers of the game are either unaware of them or have already pushed them to the horizon of oblivion.

2. The book highlights unique statistical records and their progressive evolution. How did you gather and organize this information, and why do you think these records are important for readers to understand?

A serious student always searches for the history of his or her favorite subject. Like the history of a dynasty or any particular scientific invention, the history of cricket also cannot exist without records, statistics, and their evolution. For example, as mentioned in Chapter 15 (From Three To Four Hundred), the world record for the highest individual Test innings is 400 runs by Brian Lara, played in 2004. However, an inquisitive reader may not be satisfied with just this information. They may want to explore the history behind it, the previous records, and how the milestone evolved over time.

3. As someone who has contributed to cricket journalism and statistics for many years, what do you hope readers will take away from Sparkles On The Oval Ground?

The history of domestic first-class cricket as well as international cricket spans over three centuries. Not many present-day fans and readers are aware of first-class cricket from yesteryears (before 1971, there were no non-first-class international matches), especially those played up until the Second World War. This book, being loaded with such sensational performances and achievements from that time, takes on the responsibility of introducing readers to this lesser-known world of cricket.

4. How has your deep passion for cricket influenced your decision to write this book as a journalist and statistician?

My deep passion for cricket has always driven me to explore its vast reservoir of statistics, anecdotes, human stories, unpredictability, excitement, resilience, strategic brilliance, quick thinking, individual excellence, selflessness, and team spirit. The more I delved into matches spanning the last two centuries and closely followed contemporary games, the stronger my urge became to share these remarkable discoveries with like-minded enthusiasts. This book is a product of that desire—an attempt to present cricket’s hidden gems through my unique perspective. I have come to realize that cricket statistics are not just numbers, nor are match narratives merely a sequence of events. Instead, they are as alive as the game itself, eager to tell their own story and illuminate crucial match situations or final outcomes for devoted fans. This understanding compelled me to put my insights into words.

5. Your book explores unexplored perspectives in cricket. Can you share an example of how you approached a well-known cricketing event differently?

One such unique analysis is featured in Chapter 4, Cricket’s Most Famous Zero, But If… The chapter revisits Don Bradman’s famous last Test innings, where his unexpected duck denied him the extraordinary milestone of a career batting average of 100. While this moment is widely known, my book explores an alternative perspective—analyzing how, even after that second-ball duck, Bradman could have still achieved the never-before-seen 100 batting average. This exclusive analysis is backed by available historical data, offering a fresh lens on a legendary moment in cricket.

6. Why do you believe understanding cricket’s historical significance through statistics is essential for both die-hard fans and general readers?

To fully appreciate any cricketing event or achievement, understanding its statistical background plays a crucial role. Take, for instance, Vinoo Mankad’s remarkable innings of 184 runs, discussed in Chapter 44. Mankad’s masterful stroke play, both on the front and back foot, against England’s fierce bowling attack was a display of sheer brilliance. However, if this innings were merely described without statistical context, much of its impact would be lost. Until the 2000s, detailed ball-by-ball accounts of many historical Test innings were scarce. If such records had existed earlier, the greatness of many past performances would have been even more vividly captured for both ardent fans and casual readers, making the experience of reliving cricket’s past all the more enriching.

7. How has your background in journalism shaped the writing style and structure of your book? Was writing a book more challenging than crafting articles for regional publications?

From a journalist’s perspective, writing an article or report—whether for a national or regional publication—comes with its own set of challenges. However, a book carries a more permanent weight compared to an article or report, though both demand serious effort. This book, essentially a compilation of 45 independent articles covering different facets of the game, greatly benefited from my journalistic experience. My ability to research, analyze, and present information concisely helped shape the book’s structure and tone, making the content engaging while maintaining depth.

8. The title Sparkles On The Oval Ground has been described as a journey through cricket’s highs and lows. What does this phrase represent in the context of your book?

This book is enriched with numerous anecdotes and events that capture both the triumphs and setbacks of cricket. These contrasting moments enhance its readability and reflect how cricket extends beyond the boundary lines—it embodies a way of life. The first chapter, Glory and Ignominy, exemplifies this theme. It narrates the incredible feat of Vijay Hazare, the first Indian batsman to score centuries in both innings of a Test match, showcasing his brilliance. However, the same chapter also highlights how Hazare became the first Indian batter to suffer the misfortune of recording ducks in both innings of a Test. This duality—glorious achievements and heartbreaking failures—is what makes cricket, and this book, a compelling and thought-provoking read.
